It’s no surprise that we think pools are an awesome addition to any home. Not only do they provide hours of fun, relaxation and entertainment for family and friends, but they add value to your home too. They’re not a small investment though, and a pool build can be a complex and challenging process, so choosing the right pool builder is essential to ensure your dream becomes a reality – and can last for the long haul.
At Pinnacle Pools, we pride ourselves on being one of the longest serving pool construction companies in the Sutherland Shire with over 30+ years in the pool industry. Having said that, its always wise to get more than one quote when making such a major investment in your home. Making quote comparisons can be confusing and challenging between different builders and you want to compare apples with apples, so let’s shed some light on some factors to consider when making the big decision:
Experience and Reputation
You want to choose a pool builder with a proven track record of happy clients and building high-quality pools. Look for a builder who has been in business for several years and has a reputation for delivering exceptional work. You should ask for references from past clients, read online reviews, and check their portfolio and social channels. Ask about their experience with building pools similar to what you have in mind, and enquire about any technical challenges they’ve faced on difficult builds and how they worked through them.
Communication
Good communication is key to ensuring a smooth and stress-free pool building experience. Choose a builder who is responsive, professional, and easy to communicate with. They should be able to answer your questions and provide updates on the progress of your project. They should also be transparent about their process, and be willing to provide you with a clear and detailed timeline, including important milestones and deadlines.
Working to your pool-build budget
Building a pool is a costly investment, and a poorly prepared quote can leave you up for thousands more in unforeseen costs at the end of your build, blowing your budget. A cheaper quote may also end up costing more after the build, so you need to select a builder who can confidently deliver your pool within your set budget and be realistic about what you can afford as well as transparent about any potential cost overruns.
Get quotes from 2-3 builders and compare their services, materials, and costs to find the best option for your budget. You’ll set yourself up for success by creating your own budget to compare and factor in costs for both the pool build, and also related costs outside your pool builder’s remit such as decking, fencing, landscaping and garden lighting or electrical work.
Design Capabilities
Your pool builder should be able to offer suggestions and recommendations to help you create the perfect pool, considering your lifestyle and budget as well as factors such as your property's orientation, sun exposure, and privacy concerns. Can they think outside the box for things like hiding pool equipment to make your yard that extra special space?
Quality of Materials & Construction Techniques
The materials & construction techniques used to build your pool are critical to its longevity, performance, and appearance. Look for a builder who uses high-quality materials that are durable and suitable for your climate. They should also be able to explain the advantages and disadvantages of different materials to help you make an informed decision. Consider factors such as the type of finish you want for your pool, the type of equipment you want to use, and the type of plumbing and electrical systems you need.
Warranty
A good builder should provide a comprehensive warranty that covers all aspects of your pool, including the structure, equipment, and finish. Make sure to read and understand the terms of the warranty before making your decision. The warranty should provide coverage for any defects or issues that may arise, and it should include a clear explanation of the process for making a claim.
Other important factors before choosing a pool builder
Pool Builders License: The Pool Builder should hold a valid Swimming Pool builders license from the NSW Fair Trading Department. The name on the contract should be exactly the same as what’s on the license.
Insurances: Ensure the pool will builder will obtain or has the following:
Home Building Compensation Fund (HBCF) Insurance Certificate - The majority of the works carried out by Pool Builders will have contracts that are larger than $20,000 in GST, which requires a Home Building Compensation Fund (HBCF) Insurance certificate by law. The HBCF provides a safety net for home owners in NSW faced with incomplete and defective building work carried out by a builder or tradesperson. The HBCF will provide cover if the Pool Builder becomes insolvent, dies, disappears and or has their license suspended by NSW Fair trading. The Pool Builder must obtain this cover before starting any work or taking any money under the contract, including the deposit. The HBCF will also cover you for the duration of the warranty for the works carried out as outlined by the Pool Builder.
Business Insurance – Public liability: Accidents and damage to public property can happen on a worksite and in public spaces so it’s important that you can see the business you are working with also takes this seriously. Ask to see your builder’s public liability insurance certificate to ensure they are well covered in the unfortunate event something does happen.
So, there you have it, there are many important factors to consider when choosing the right pool builder. Having these points addressed early in the process will give you the peace of mind and confidence to know it’s going to be done right!
